The St Kilda Triangle – an update

January 16, 2012 at 10:55 AM

Faithful readers of the Keen Planning blog, I didn’t think it would come so soon, but there is an update to the saga that is the St Kilda Triangle. At the Port Phillip Council Meeting on 22 November 2011, a document was presented to Council for public release detailing a vision and principles for the redevelopment of the St Kilda Triangle. The document was based on comprehensive community consultation during the 4 months process.

The Vision reads:

“The St Kilda Triangle is a loved seaside place that acknowledges and builds on the local character and location. It is a public place supported by a mix of uses to make it attractive, and welcoming. It makes St Kilda a great place.”

The principles are based upon the feedback received during the community consultation process and the strategic framework of Port Phillip Council. The key themes include:

  • Public Open Space that is accessible and useful to everyone.
  • A connection to the cultural and recreational opportunities already existing in the area such as The Palais, Luna Park and the Esplanade Markets.
  • Limited commercial opportunities that contribute to the community and public feel of the site.
  • The longevity and sustainability of the site, i.e. assessment of the future of the site and access to the site with respect to the Triple Bottom Line to ensure that the site retains its value for the long term.
