In December 2021, the ‘Future Melbourne Committee’ meeting brought the year to a close by endorsing the Greenline Implementation Plan which has been a key project within the pipeline at Melbourne City Council.

The Greenline Implementation Plan is set to redevelop a 4km stretch of waterfront along the northern banks of the Yarra River which will bring to life a tree lined corridor stretching from Federation Square all the way down to the end of Collins Street in Docklands.

The strategy has been closely designed with the Aboriginal community and will have a strong focus on celebrating the Aboriginal heritage of the Yarra River precinct. From a pedestrian perspective, the Greenline Plan will provide numerous pedestrian boardwalks, parks and public gathering spaces interspersed with new cultural landmarks.

A key objective of the strategy is to resuscitate the outdated walkways and public spaces along the western end of Flinders Street. The Greenline Plan will provide contemporary urban spaces which will drastically increase the safety and ease of movement between the CBD and the Yarra River and Docklands precincts.

The project is set to be one of the biggest city transformations since Federation Square in 2002 and is expected to cost up to $300 million. Melbourne City Council has called on both state and federal government to assist with funding the project and is currently in discussion to bring the first steps of the Greenline strategy to reality.
